Is it possible to build a self-healing distribution infrastructure? In other words, is it possible to build a system that delivers to our society everything that we need, one which can never completely break down?
Sure it is, and when you couple that with capitalism, I think what you'll find is there is a built-in redundancy in the transportation system in the United States of America. We noted after 9/11 that even when all the airliners were taken out of the sky for five-days, Operational Resilience our civilization still functioned, people used ground transportation such as trains, cars, and buses.
If a major freeway goes out there is always another route to get across the country or into another state. This does not mean it will be the most efficient route, but until the freeway bridge is fixed, or whatever the disruption occurred is taken care of, it will suffice and people will get those things that they need, even with a catastrophic clog.
Our distribution system in the United States is one of the most impressive anywhere on the planet, and if covers an incredible expanse, as our nation is so huge. It operates 24/7 and never turns off, and although there are temporary problems now and again, it seems almost self-healing. Consider if you will Hurricane Katrina, when Interstate 10 which is one of the most traveled freeways in the nation was out.
Truck Traffic, buses and personal transportation was diverted to alternate routes, and everything still made it, somehow where it needed to go. This is a testament to the strength of our system, one which is so resilient, robust, and with such redundancy that everything, and everybody can get to where it's going no matter what. Please consider all this.
